Braces Versus Invisalign: Which Is Right for Me?

Roughly 32 percent of people are unhappy with how their teeth look. However, orthodontic work can almost always correct misaligned teeth to give you a smile that you can be proud of.

While there are multiple types of braces to choose from, the two most popular orthodontic treatment options are the traditional metal brackets and Invisalign clear aligners. They both have unique advantages and disadvantages, so once you find an orthodontist to work with, it is important to discuss your options.

Traditional Metal Braces

This type of braces is the most common option. People with metal braces will visit their local orthodontist about once a month to have their braces adjusted and have their teeth checked for progress. Many patients enjoy having metal brackets so they can decorate their braces with the different colored bands.

However, because these braces are highly visible, some people feel self-conscious about having metal wires that everyone can see. They can also cause some discomfort as the metal wires rub against the cheeks or if food gets stuck between the teeth and the wires.

For the most complex oral corrections, metal braces are often the best option. The wiring is able to be reconfigured to meet the needs of the patient.

Invisalign

Invisalign clear aligners are invisible and removable, so for those who are self-conscious about the prospect of orthodontic treatment, there is nothing to worry about. However, Invisalign requires patients to come in slightly more often, about every four to six weeks, in addition to changing the Invisalign trays every two weeks.

Since there are so many sets of custom trays that need to be made for the patient, the price tag tends to be higher than traditional braces, too. Depending on the length of treatment, Invisalign can cost almost three times as much as metal braces do. Despite this, many people prefer Invisalign for the increased comfort.

However, because Invisalign clear aligners are removable, it is easy to forget to wear them consistently. Therefore, Invisalign is better for patients that will be very diligent about wearing their aligners!
